the grub screw in the Bessy is hardened steel and would gouge the bar before being gouged. I doubt you'd ever need to maintenance them.

Great rack! I think I would have put a plywood back instead of messing with the drywall…or in your case maybe a solid wood tongue and groove backing 😀

Painted maple? Oh well. For the back painted or not, i would go buy a sheet of luan floor underlayment for the back and just surface nail it to the back. You can search in the pile at the big box store and find some with a nice wood grain pattern that would look good with a clear or stained woodgrain and its cheap. Your daughters right noting is perfect, and imperfections my dad always said give a project a hand made feel. I actually was thinking about doing a project like that, i have a spot thats perfect for it, but ductwork for the second story is right behind it, and spices last longer if they are not exposed to heat, like by the oven. So mine would need insulation behind it. Time to teach them kids how to do some woodworking, i was about your daughters age when my dad was building boats in the basement. I'm going on 64 now. My 40 year old kids i would not trust with power tools, i didn't have a woodworking shop until they moved out.

Great project that turned out really well. Hmmm, however, there does come to mind something about child labor laws..... 🙂
